Rwenzori
A Hiker's Paradise in the Heart of Africa
Uganda is home to some of Africa's most spectacular mountains, each offering unique landscapes, ecosystems, and challenges. From glaciated peaks to volcanic calderas, ancient rainforests to alpine meadows, every trail tells a different story.
Whether you're a seasoned mountaineer seeking the technical challenge of the Rwenzori "Mountains of the Moon" or a casual hiker looking for a scenic day trek up Mount Elgon, Gari Trips Uganda has the perfect adventure waiting for you.
Explore Uganda's Majestic Peaks
Each mountain in Uganda offers a unique hiking experience — from challenging multi-day expeditions to scenic day hikes perfect for all fitness levels.
Mountains of the Moon
Mount Rwenzori
"The Mountains of the Moon"
Rising majestically on Uganda's western border with the DRC, the Rwenzori Mountains are Africa's most legendary mountain range. Named by ancient geographer Ptolemy as the source of the Nile, these "Mountains of the Moon" feature glaciers, snowfields, and Africa's third-highest peak — Margherita Peak at 5,109 meters.
The multi-day Central Circuit and Kilembe Trails take you through five distinct vegetation zones, from tropical rainforest to alpine tundra, with breathtaking views of glacial lakes, waterfalls, and unique giant flora like the groundsels and lobelias found nowhere else on Earth.
Ancient Volcano
Mount Elgon
"The Mountain That Births the Sun"
Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano that once stood taller than Kilimanjaro before centuries of erosion shaped it into its current form. Straddling the Uganda-Kenya border, this massive mountain features Africa's largest volcanic caldera — 40km in diameter — and the spectacular Siwa, Wanale, and Khauka caves.
The Sasa and Piswa trails offer 4-5 day treks through bamboo forests, moorlands, and giant heather zones, culminating at Wagagai Peak (4,321m). Along the way, hikers encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, over 300 bird species, and ancient cave paintings.
Gorilla's Teeth
Mount Sabyinyo
"The Old Man's Teeth"
Named for its jagged peaks that resemble the teeth of an old man, Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m) is the oldest of the Virunga volcanoes and the only peak where Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC meet at the summit. This challenging day hike takes you through bamboo forests and alpine meadows to a tri-point border marker.
The trail is famous for its steep sections with ladders and ropes, making it an exciting adventure for fit hikers. Along the way, you may spot golden monkeys, forest elephants, and enjoy panoramic views of Lake Kivu and the surrounding Virunga volcanoes.
The Guide
Mount Muhavura
"The Guide" — Visible from Miles Away
At 4,127 meters, Mount Muhavura is the highest and most distinct of the Virunga volcanoes in Uganda. Its conical shape makes it visible from great distances, serving as a natural landmark for travelers. The name means "The Guide" in the local language, as it has guided generations of locals and visitors alike.
The hike to the summit is a challenging 1-2 day trek that rewards hikers with panoramic views of all the Virunga volcanoes, Lake Edward, and even the Rwenzori Mountains on clear days. The summit crater lake is a breathtaking sight.
The Hidden Gem
Mount Moroto
"The Remote Wilderness Experience"
Standing at 3,083 meters in the remote Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda, Mount Moroto is one of Africa's least-explored hiking destinations. This isolated mountain offers a completely different experience from the popular Virunga and Rwenzori ranges, with semi-arid landscapes, unique wildlife, and authentic cultural encounters with the Karamojong people.
The trek takes you through dry montane forest, rocky outcrops, and cliffs home to rare bird species. It's a true adventure for those seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences and cultural immersion.
Where Gold Meets Silverback
Mount Mgahinga
"The Smallest but Mightiest Virunga"
Mount Mgahinga (3,474m) is the smallest of the eight Virunga volcanoes but packs a powerful punch in terms of biodiversity and cultural significance. Part of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, this mountain is home to both endangered mountain gorillas and the rare golden monkey.
The day hike to the summit takes you through dense bamboo forests and alpine moorlands to a crater lake at the peak. It's an excellent option for those combining gorilla trekking with a challenging but rewarding day hike.
