Know what to expect before you book, what to bring and how we turn your ideas into a confirmed safari.
01 / FOREST ENCOUNTERS
Arrange permits before fixing the rest.
Tell us your preferred trekking dates, number of trekkers and ages. We check gorilla or chimpanzee permit availability and build the route around the agreed park, date and trekking location. Availability can change until the arrangements are secured.
Gorilla trekking
Gorilla trekking is for travellers aged 15 and above. Children under 15 cannot trek gorillas. Bwindi has several trekking sectors; your lodge and transfer plan must match the sector on your permit. Mgahinga is a separate park and permit arrangement.
Chimpanzee tracking
Share the ages of children before we recommend an activity. UWA’s published guidelines set a minimum age of 12 for chimpanzee tracking; we check the requirements for your chosen location and dates before booking.
How we handle your permits
We discuss suitable dates and confirm the permit arrangements and fees in your written quotation.
After the required payment, we arrange permits subject to availability and send written confirmation of what has been secured.
We request the identity details needed for the booking directly. Do not enter passport numbers or upload passport copies through the public enquiry form.
Bring the identification and permit information specified in your joining instructions, and attend the ranger briefing at the agreed time.
Under Gari Trips Uganda’s current terms, gorilla and chimpanzee permit fees are non-refundable and trekking dates cannot be changed after booking. Please check your dates carefully before authorising payment. Trek duration varies with conditions and the animals’ location; tell us about walking or mobility considerations in advance.
Distances alone do not tell the whole story. Traffic, rain, roadworks, park tracks and your exact lodge affect travel time. The examples below are approximate lodge-published driving times, rather than promised arrival times. Allow extra time for meals, sightseeing, rhino tracking and other stops.
Example road journeys to specific accommodation
Journey
Approximate driving time
Planning note
Kampala or Entebbe → Rwakobo Rock, Lake Mburo
4–5 hours
Equator visits, lunch and wildlife activities require additional time.
Kampala → Murchison River Lodge
About 5–6 hours
A Ziwa rhino-tracking visit makes this a longer travel day.
Entebbe → Murchison River Lodge
About 6 hours
Airport arrival formalities and stops are additional.
Kampala or Entebbe → Rushaga Gorilla Lodge, southern Bwindi
About 9 hours
A full road-transfer day. Other Bwindi sectors have different routes.
Kisoro town → Mutanda Lake Resort
About 45 minutes
Allow extra time for lake-road conditions; this is not the transfer time to a trekking gate.
We plan inter-park journeys around your exact accommodation and activities. Ask us to add nights if you prefer a slower pace, or discuss a fly-in option where it suits the route. Plan road transfers in daylight and leave a sensible buffer before international flights. We confirm airport timing with you before you book flights.
Broken-in walking boots with a good grip, plus comfortable socks.
Long trousers and a lightweight long-sleeved shirt.
A rain jacket, small daypack and waterproof protection for belongings.
Gardening-style gloves for handling vegetation, and a warm layer for cool mornings.
A refillable water bottle and any packed lunch arranged for your trek.
For safari days & evenings
Comfortable light clothing, a sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
A light fleece or jacket for early starts and highland evenings.
Insect repellent, a torch or headlamp, and your personal essentials.
Camera, spare batteries, binoculars if you have them, chargers and a power bank.
Travel documents, insurance details and copies of your confirmed itinerary.
For rafting, cycling or camping, we confirm what equipment the operator or vehicle package supplies and what you should bring. Do not assume tents, bedding or specialist activity equipment are included unless listed in your quotation.
Taking a domestic flight? Confirm the airline’s baggage allowance, bag dimensions and any soft-bag requirement for your booked service before packing. These may differ from your international flight allowance.
04 / CLEAR STEPS TO CONFIRMATION
From enquiry to your Uganda welcome.
Send an enquiry. Share your dates, group size, interests and preferred stays. A saved reference records your request; it does not reserve a vehicle, lodge or permit.
Review your written quotation. Check the route, dates, room types, meals, activities, inclusions, exclusions, currency and payment instructions. Ask us to clarify anything before paying.
Pay the required deposit. A non-refundable deposit of 20% of the booking value is required within 14 days for reservation confirmation; otherwise the reservation is automatically cancelled.
Receive written confirmation. We confirm the arrangements secured for you. A payment request or proof of transfer alone is not our booking confirmation.
Pay the balance. All bookings must be paid in full 30 days before client arrival. Bookings that do not meet this deadline are automatically cancelled.
Check your joining details. Before departure, review the agreed pick-up point, timing, contacts, permit arrangements and packing information with us.
Making payment
Rates are quoted in USD. Payments may be made in USD or UGX at the current exchange rate on the payment date, by bank transfer or cash (post-2009 US Dollar notes only). Cheques are accepted only for bank accounts held and operated in Uganda.
For self-drive or vehicle hire, follow the payment schedule and inclusions in your written quotation and hire agreement. A planner estimate is not the price of a complete safari. Cancellation conditions are set out in our full terms.
